Our Young Gun profile takes a look at some of the young talent across the advertising, adtech, marketing and media sector in Australia. It aims to shed light on the varying roles, people and companies across the buzzing industry.
Today we speak to Network 10 sales executive Josh Gilbert.
Time in current role and at the company:
12 months at Network 10 and two and half years in my current role.
How long have you been in the industry?
Three years.
How did you get here? Was this always the plan?
Funnily enough, working in media sales never crossed my mind. Years back, during my uni days, I undertook a radio production internship at a sports and entertainment business. With this giving me an understanding of how the media operates and along with a background in sales at Telstra, I decided to combine the two and pursue a career in media sales.
Who guides you day to day?
With a recently new sales team at Network 10, I’m lucky enough to be able to draw on an office full of talented teams and individuals who all enjoy each other’s company whilst making the company a great place to work.
What’s the best thing about the industry you work in?
The best thing about working in TV sales is seeing how some of the country’s biggest businesses operate. I also can’t go past the work perks. I’m lucky to work in an industry that is so lively, with so many great events on the calendar.
And the biggest challenge?
Trying to manage all of those great social events on the calendar! But also, with the industry being in a disruptive time, it's important to keep up to date with trends to future proof myself.
Whose job have you set your sights on in the future?
I’m keen to keep progressing through the ranks at Network 10. I do love my sport, so maybe something in this space.
Where do you turn for inspiration?
Inspiration comes in many forms – I find it through podcasts, movies and athletes. The work ethic of our Aussie and international sports stars is incredible to watch and inspires me a great deal.
My favourite advert is:
The one I featured in for Ballarat Mobile Phones - I ran rings around Plugger Lockett under the Sydney Harbour Bridge in one of the commercials.
Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?
I was on numerous TV commercials with AFL greats Tony Lockett and Paul Kelly as a child.
In five years' time I'll be:
Continuing to work my way up through the ranks, ensuring that I’m always feeling challenged and excited by my role and it’s potential.
