With just a week to go until the start of the 2018 UnLtd Big Clash, we sit down with the captains of the teams to get to know the players a bit more.
The debute Melbourne tournament is happening on the 15 February
The Melbourne Media Owners team is captained by Ooh! Media's Tim Murphy and he's bringing some fighting talk to the first ever Melbourne Big Clash.
Come along to watch the tournament on 8 February at Sydney Uni Oval, and the Melbroune contingent will play in Fawkner Park, Melbourne on 15 February. The Media Agency team has taken the glory for the past two years but more importantly The Big Clash has raised $130,000 to date. There's more info here.
Full name: Tim Murphy
Job title, company name: Southern Sales Director- oOh!
Location you are based: Melbourne
Duration in current role/time at the company: Been at oOh! for over 11 years
What’s your finest sporting moment on the pitch/field/court? 5 Senior cricket premierships, plus a state T20 Final played on the MCG.
Who is most likely to be out for a duck in this year’s UnLtd Big Clash cricket match? Peter Butler has always talked up a big game. But I’ve heard he is very dicey against a swinging ball.
Why is your team going to win Big Clash? As media salespeople, we are beaten up day in day out by the likes of Trevor Crook and Simon Reid. This event is not about the game of cricket. It’s about timely revenge.
What does UnLtd mean to you/Why are you taking part in Big Clash? I have admired the work of UnLtd for many years. As an industry we can achieve so much and help so many when we all work together, and I think we all know how lucky we are in what we do for a living. Unltd is a wonderful vehicle for us all to get behind and push together, and I’m delighted to play a very small role in helping build that momentum here in Melbourne.
Best thing about the industry you work in: This industry breeds passion, positive energy and rewards hard work. It also encourages us to live life and have fun. So many others simply aren’t as fortunate; which is why we can combine all those wonderful aspects of our industry at events like the UnLtd Big Clash, and use it to try and help others who are so deserving.
Why should people come down to watch your team battle it out against the others? You can come down and watch cricketing legends such as Ben Sumpter and Richard Marks, or up and coming superstars like Bryce Crosswell and James Hansford. Or just come and enjoy a few drinks in the sun with your mates!
This year the adtech team and creative team are new on the pitch - do they have a chance against the Media agencies and Media owners? Quite simply, no. Andrew Knowles is the skipper of the adTech team, and I know for a fact that he is a very bad sportsman, and an even worse leader. They will be a basket-case. And the Creative team might be good at table tennis, but they will be no good at cricket.
Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you? I hate answering questions about myself.
Top networking tip: Have fun. People like spending time with people who are having fun.
My favourite restaurant for a business lunch is: Entrecote
My favourite advert is: So many, but in recent times the Bonds Balls dynamic campaign on oOh!’s Bourke St site is hard to beat!
My must-have gadget is: My Popsocket on the back of iphone. It’s so useful but also a great conversation starter!
My favourite TV show is: Shameless - the US version
The last book I read: Steve Johnson’s autobiography. He is a scallywag who pushed himself to achieve great things.
My mantra / philosophy is: Dream Big, Have Fun, and Get Sh!t done.
I got into advertising/ad tech/marketing because: I was studying Marketing at RMIT and was lucky enough to get an intern role with Mitchells. Four days into my career I attended the famous ARN Trivia night and won $500 in cash. Uni never seemed that important after that.
If I wasn't doing this for a living, I'd be: I always wanted to be a journalist growing up, so lets go with that.
Define your job in one word: Buoyant
What's your poison: Heathcote Shiraz or a Spiced rum
Come down to watch the tournament in Sydney on 8 February and see if the Media Agency team can take victory for a third year running, or whether the Media Owners, Creative Agencies or AdTech team can steal the glory on the pitch. There's also a charity auction on the day. The second tournament takes palce in Fawkner Park, Melbourne on 15 February.
