In a year of political turbulence, Auspol has emerged as the most popular hashtag of the year and LibSpill as one of the most popular moments, as revealed by Twitter Australia.
Meanwhile the 'Golden Tweet' in Australia – the most retweeted tweet from an Australian – was from member of pop band 5 Seconds of Summer, Michael Clifford, tweeting an image of his bandaged face after walking into a pyrotechnics display while playing a gig in London. 162,497 users retweeted the image.
After #AusPol, the most popular Australian hashtags were #QandA, #LibSpill and #RefugeesWelcome.
#5SOS also managed to make its way into the top 10 along with #MKR, football codes #NRL and #AFL and #Eurovision, following Australia’s first Eurovision performance by singer Guy Sebastian.
In Australia, LibSpill made it in the top moments, while the key global moment in Australia was the Cricket World Cup.
In addition, Australia's most tweeted emoji was the “tears of joy” face.
Globally, some of the most influential moments on Twitter included #MarriageEquaity, #RefugeesWelcome, #BlackLivesMatter and many hashtags surrounding the horrific attacks in Paris including #PrayForParis and the phrase, Je Suis Charlie.
