Nine has refuted reports that suggest The Footy Show has been axed from after 24 years on-air.

“Nine will be broadcasting 23 Thursday night NRL games in 2018 and so the NRL Footy Show will have a new look and feel to reflect the games the audience have just enjoyed watching,” Nine said in a statement.

However, Nine said the exact format of the Footy Show and appearing talent is still to be determined.

A report on nine.com.au said the show "won't be going anywhere", but viewers can look forward to plenty of changes next year as Nine enters "a new era of rugby league coverage".

"The NRL Footy Show will undergo an evolution to follow suit," the report said.

Rumours the show had been cancelled stemmed from a report in The Daily Telegraph that said NRL legend and host Paul 'Fatty' Vautin has been dropped.

The report claims Vautin will see out his contract for 2018 in a diminished role as a live football commentator.

Nine said in a statement it is still finalising the format of its rugby league line-up for next year and added Vautin remains contracted for the 2018 NRL season.

At Nine Upfront's last week, the network announced a Monday night panel-style NRL show for 2018, but similarly the exact format and cast involved is yet to be finalised.

The news follows the departure of Lisa Wilkinson after a pay dispute.
