Telstra creates top media and sponsorship role

Telstra has appointed Genelle Sharples into a newly created general manager of media and sponsorships role. She takes the media portion of what was Harry Lowes GM of media and digital role. Sharples previously worked with Telstra CMO Joe Pollard at Publicis Mojo where she led new business development. She has also held roles at IPG Mediabrands in Australia and for the last two years Sharples has been a media and advertising consultant in the UAE. More here

Special Group creative duo exit for Google

Founding creative partners Matty Burton and Dave Bowman are exiting independent agency Special Group to take new roles at Google.The pair will be leading the Google Zoo operation, its in-house creative and technology team, throughout the Asia Pacific region. Burton and Bowman will remain vested in the Special Group business, maintaining a shareholding in the company. A global search is currently underway for their replacements. The top creatives have been with the agency since it launched in Australia three years ago, following its success in the New Zealand market. Find out more here.

Interbrand hires new CEO from Nine

Brand consultancy agency Interbrand Australia has hired former Nine director of innovation and transformation Nathan Birch as CEO. He replaces Kieren Cooney who left Interbrand to join REA as its first CMO. Birch joins the agency with more than 18 years’ experience across digital, innovation and customer strategies working with a wide range of brands. Prior to Nine, he was director of digital strategy at Deloitte Digital for over two years. In his new role, Birch will spearhead customer centricity at a time where competition for brands and companies is intensifying.

Tom Armstrong exits Fairfax amidst commercial leadership shake up

Tom Armstrong has exited Fairfax Media after three years leading the metro commercial team, AdNews can reveal. Armstrong was promoted to chief revenue officer of Australian metro publishing this year from his previous role of commercial director. His departure is effective immediately. The move follows a wider shake-up at Fairfax that has seen Chris Janz step into the role of MD of its Australian metro publishing division. Find out more here.

TBWA Sydney hires chief strategy officer from Grey London

TBWA Sydney has hired former Grey London exec Matt Springate as its chief strategy officer. He replaces Hristos Varouhas, who after eight years with TBWA Sydney has been promoted to global planning director for Apple at Media Arts Lab\TBWA Los Angeles. Springate joins recently appointed chief creative officer Andy Dillallo, who begins his role in June. He will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the Sydney office across clients including Foxtel, David Jones, Virgin Mobile, ANZ, Airbnb, MasterCard, Tourism New Zealand, Gatorade and apple. Matt Rowley replaces Tom Armstrong at Fairfax

Matt Rowley has replaced Tom Armstrong as chief revenue officer for metro publishing at Fairfax Media after his sudden exit was announced yesterday. He has been promoted from his role of chief development officer at Fairfax, now responsible for leading agency and direct sales, key account management, brands and audiences, ad tech and operations and commercial innovation. Andrew Mudgway has also been promoted to national sales director of agencies from his previous role of Victorian agency sales director. More here

Publicis Media investment arm hires commercial director

The investment business of Publicis Media has appointed Tina Gavros to the newly-created roles of commercial director. Gavros joins from Starcom, where she was Sydney trading director. She will be responsible for working with PMX media partners to drive investment opportunities. At Starcom, Gavros will be replaced by Sue-Ellen Osborn (see below). Gavros has spent 17 years at Starcom and worked with clients including Samsung, Metcash and Subaru. She is the third recent hire, joining Jodi Fraser, who heads up Publicis Screen, and Simon Carley, who joins PMX from Ebiquity to drive business analytics. Find out more here

Starcom Australia appoints Sydney trading director

Starcom Australia has appointed Sue-Ellen Osborn as Sydney trading director. Osborn moves across from Zenith where she was group business director. She replaces Tina Gavros, who has become the commercial director of Publicis Media’s group investment practice, Publicis Media Exchange (PMX). Osborn has more than 15 years of experience in the media industry in television sales and then at Initiative before joining Zenith in 2003. In her new role, she will be responsible for leading the agency’s investment product team and media relations, working closely with PMX. She will also sit on the Sydney leadership team. Two weeks ago, Starcom Australia's national trading head Andrew Taylor left the business after two years. More here.
