The newest TV ad from R U OK? draws inspiration from Julian Leeser’s stirring maiden parliamentary speech.
Suicide prevention charity R U OK? has launched a new TV ad which encourages viewers to look for subtle behavioural changes in others.
Called ‘Signs’, the campaign was inspired by Member for Berowra Julian Leeser’s maiden parliamentary speech, in which he discussed his father’s suicide.
The full-length commercial runs for two minutes, featuring a wide range of scenarios in which an individual notices that something isn’t quite right with their friend’s behaviour. It finishes with a call to action – to start a conversation.
60-second, 30-second and 15-second versions have also been produced and will screen in movie theatres, online and on television.
The commercial was written and developed by Mick Hunter and directed by Simon Frost.
“This is one of the strongest TVCs R U OK? has launched over the last 10 years. Simon and Mick really nailed the final piece, especially the small nuances that might indicate something’s not quite right with a friend, loved one or colleague. We couldn’t be happier with it,” says R U OK? CEO Brendan Maher.
“We’ve had nothing but positive feedback and hope that ‘Signs’ will help change behaviours around checking in with mates and loved ones and prompt us all to be a bit more aware.”
RU OK? ambassador and the commercial’s narrator Jack Thompson adds: “I was very keen to narrate this production, it’s a powerful piece. I’ve been involved with R U OK? for many years and can’t stress enough the need for us to step up when our mates need it, even if asking the question might feel uncomfortable.
“I hope Signs acts as a reminder to look a little deeper, trust our instincts and start a conversation any day it’s needed.”
