The second stage of the Deadly Questions campaign launched this week with a focus on listening to Aboriginal voices speak about a Treaty in Victoria.

Aboriginal Victoria and Clemenger BBDO Melbourne launched the campaign which features Aboriginal Victorians answering some of the most commonly asked, but often taboo questions, they received.

This series of questions focuses on the passage of the Advancing the Treaty Process with Aboriginal Victorians Act 2018 through Parliament in June.

The Act is intended to provide a road map for the next stage of the Treaty process in Victoria.

The Deadly Questions website received a total of 2,600 questions. A couple of the most frequent ones included “What do you hope a Treaty will mean?” and “What's a Treaty in your opinion?”

John Smith, the Executive Director at Aboriginal Victoria and a Dunghutti man, said they received a “fantastic” response since the campaign launched.

“The campaign is about amplifying the voices of Aboriginal Victorians and sharing their stories. It’s provided an important avenue for non-Aboriginal and Aboriginal Victorians to engage in meaningful discussion as we move towards Treaty,” he said.

The ECD at Clemenger BBDO Melbourne, Evan Roberts, also said they are overwhelmed with the response.

“We’re thrilled with how the campaign has gone so far. Our task now is to create a dialogue about what a Treaty will mean for us all and do that in a way that moves beyond the digital platform.”

In our September issue, AdNews investigated the motivation, process, challenges and controversies that made the Deadly Questions campaign an important part of the dialogue between Indigenous Australians and the rest of the country.
