News Corp has launched an appeal in partnership with Commonwealth Bank, 2GB and the NSW Farmers Association to raise money for drought-stricken farmers in NSW.

Through the 'We're for the Bush' appeal, newspapers and radio hosts will encourage the public to enter Commonwealth Bank branches where they can donate, with all proceeds going to the Salvation Army, which will distribute vouchers that farmers can redeem for food at IGA Supermarkets and fodder at CRT Country Stores.

The Commonwealth Bank has contributed $50,000, News Corp and 2GB $25,000 each and Metcash $15,000. A series of events will take place later this week, with the appeal to run for a number of weeks.

Two years of dry weather in north-west NSW have left half the state in drought. Prime Minister Tony Abbott yesterday announced a drought assistance package while touring the drought-affected areas.

News Corp executive general manager NSW Brett Clegg said: "We have been inspired to tell the stories and support our readers across NSW who are doing it tough because of the ongoing drought that is affecting so much of this great state.

"The economic and social impacts are more far-reaching than many realise and it is time that we all step up to help our fellow citizens out in their time of need."

NSW Farmers chief executive Matt Brand said: "Many farmers were stretched financially and emotionally and it means a lot that so many organisations care about the land, their animals and families like they do.

"Our farmers take great pride in the food and fibre they produce for Australia and this appeal gives them recognition and help through a difficult period."
