Let's get real for a sec — the traditional 9-to-5 grind can feel like a creativity-crushing machine for many of us neurodiverse folks.

But here's the tea: in the world of freelancing and solopreneurship, our non-linear brains are the secret sauce to success.

So, grab your favorite playlist (or white noise machine, no judgment here), and let's dig into the reason that one coworker who is always late would probably be a really amazing entrepreneur or freelancer.

The struggle is real (but it doesn't have to be)

First, let's address the elephant in the room — the traditional workforce hasn't always been a vibe for us neurodivergent types.

According to ADHDAdvisor.org, adults with ADHD are 60% more likely to be fired, 30% more likely to face chronic employment issues, and a whopping 300% more likely to quit a job impulsively.

But here's the plot twist — those same traits that might get us side-eyed in a conventional office are often our superpowers in the solo business world. It's not that we can't succeed; it's that we need the right environment to grow. And for many of us, that environment is one we craft ourselves, that works with our own energetic peaks and valleys, and doesn’t require us to mask in order to fit in.

The non-linear path

So, why exactly do neurodiverse creatives thrive in freelance and solopreneur roles? Let's break it down:

  1. Flexibility: Freelancing offers the freedom to work when our brains are in the zone. Night owl? Embrace it. Need frequent breaks to stay focused? You do you. It's like having a "Design Your Dream Workday" adventure, and the result is actually working with our non-linear brains to be super productive, rather than forcing work during times when we’re not.
  2. Hyperfocus: Our not-so-secret weapon: That intense concentration we get when we're vibing with a project? In the solopreneur world, that's not a distraction — it's obsession. When we’re in our creative flow, we can’t be stopped.
  3. Creativity: Many neurodiverse individuals are creativity powerhouses. As freelancers, we have the freedom to let our imaginations run wild, coming up with innovative solutions that more linear thinkers might miss.
  4. Multitasking: While multitasking isn't always the move, many of us neurodiverse folks excel at juggling multiple projects. In the freelance world, this ability to switch gears quickly and manage various clients can be a major asset. It's like our brains are a one-person band, and we're hitting every note.
  5. Risk-taking and innovation: Many neurodiverse individuals have a natural inclination towards risk-taking and thinking outside the box. In the entrepreneurial world, these traits can lead to groundbreaking ideas and successful ventures. We're not just colouring outside the lines — we're creating whole new canvases.

Remember, in the freelance world, there's no such thing as "normal.” And that is your ticket to standing out in a crowded and competitive market.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got three half-finished projects calling my name, a brilliant new business idea I need to jot down, and a sudden urge to completely revamp my brand colors.

But that's just another day in the life of a neurodiverse solopreneur — and I wouldn't have it any other way.
