Young Guns: Tayla Harrison at VMO

By AdNews | 28 May 2024

In this series, AdNews spotlights young talent in the Australian media, marketing and advertising sector. This time it's VMO account manager Tayla Harrison.

Time in current role/time at the company:

I started at VMO as a sales coordinator in the Melbourne team just over two years ago. In my first year, I was promoted to account executive, and I've recently been promoted to account manager a few months ago.

2. How long have you been in the industry?

Just over two years, with this being my first role in the media industry.

How did you get here? Was this always the plan?

Media wasn't always the plan after school. I always thought I wanted to be a secondary school visual arts teacher, so I started a Bachelor of teaching, majoring in arts. 12 months into the degree, I realised it wasn't for me. I've always had a love for business and decided to transfer to a Bachelor of business, majoring in sports management. From here, one of my friends at the time was a sales coordinator at Val Morgan Cinema and she mentioned there was an entry-level role available at VMO as a sales coordinator. Here I am two years later!

Who is your right-hand person/who guides you day to day?

Jasmine Meehan. Jas is a senior account manager within the VIC sales team and she's a powerhouse of a woman. Not only is she an amazing mum, partner, and an absolute star of a salesperson, but she's also a constant source of inspiration. Her mentorship and guidance have empowered me both personally and professionally.

What’s the best thing about the industry you work in?

The best thing about the media industry is undoubtedly the relationships we build, which I believe are fundamental to success within the industry. With the collective focus being our clients, collaborating with agencies to deliver exceptional outcomes for our clients is what drives me day to day. I thrive on pushing the boundaries of what's possible and seeing campaigns come to life truly excites me.

And the biggest challenge?

The most exciting challenge is maintaining quality campaign service for all clients. Relationships and servicing are so important within this industry and I'm passionate about building strong relationships and delivering exceptional service consistently.

Whose job have you set your sights on in the future?

My short-term goal is to be promoted to senior account manager. I have just been promoted, so I look forward to learning and developing my skillset to achieve this goal in the coming year. In the long term, I'd love to be a group sales manager before I’m 30.

Where do you turn for inspiration?

My dad, 100%. He is one of the hardest workers I know. His dedication, determination, strength of self and confidence inspire me every day.

Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?

I am fluent in Australian Sign Language (AUSLAN).

In five years time, I'll be:

A group sales manager and well on my way to a state sales director role.
