Simone Crick: Studio Director at Broadsheet
Time in current role/time at the company:
Coming up on five years.
How long have you been in the industry?
Nine years.
How did you get here? Was this always the plan?
Growing up an avid consumer of media – mostly print – my career path has pretty much gone to plan. I have, however tried on quite a few hats – PR, sales, account management, strategy and production - to figure out exactly what my interests and strengths are.
Being curious is such an important value when navigating your career and allowing flexibility along the way will open so many more doors for you.
Who is your right-hand person/who guides you day to day?
My work wife Christina Voss, Broadsheet’s Strategy and Solutions Director. I’m endlessly inspired by her approach to work. She and I share a brain and often finish each other’s thoughts.
Also, a special mention to my actual husband Kai Wong – General Manager APAC at Bondi Sands. He is an incredible leader and I’ve learnt a lot about driving high performance teams while unpacking our days over dinner.
What’s the best thing about the industry you work in?
The positive impact creative work can make to the wider community.
And the biggest challenge?
Right now, I think the media industry has a unique challenge in navigating the world of big tech, its ever-changing algorithms and the influence it has on everyday life.
Whose job have you set your sights on in the future?
I’m remaining flexible and open to wherever my career takes me. Broadly though, I hope I’m some sort of leader in the cultural space, sharing stories and art with the world. Actually, that sounds a lot like Tony Ellwood’s job – director of the National Gallery of Victoria.
Where do you turn for inspiration?
I turn to books, travel, art and above all food and drink.
My favourite advert is:
I recently came across UN Women Australia’s #EmpowerMoves campaign by The Monkeys and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. Created to celebrate International Day of the Girl, it shone a light on the societal issues girls and women face every day – gender equality and safety. It’s really, really clever.
Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?
I have a fascination with bridges. When I’m feeling particularly stressed, I like to watch documentaries about their construction and maintenance.
In five years' time I'll be:
Based on my last answer, perhaps an engineer?
