In this series, AdNews spotlights young talent in the Australian media, marketing and advertising sector. This time it's Merkle B2B account executive Sai Smaran Poona.
Time in current role/time at company:
Eight months as account executive – about two years at Merkle B2B.
How long have you been in the industry?
Just about two years.
How did you get here? Was this always the plan?
I studied advertising in university and getting into the media industry was always the plan. Starting off my career at Merkle B2B is probably one the best things that could have happened because I have learnt so much in the time I have been here and continue to learn every day.
Who is your right-hand who guides you day to day?
Our client director, Shivani Patel no doubt has been the best guide and support system to me. She has always had the best interest for me since day one and always provided the direction I need to see me continuously succeed. The best mentor one could ask for.
What’s the best thing about the industry you work in?
There is so much out there. Every day is different, so much to explore and learn. The people, knowledge, and experiences you come across are unbelievable. Every day is a new learning experience.
And the biggest challenge?
There are so many learning opportunities but being in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment – it is a bit challenging to always keep yourself up-to-date with the industry, but where is the fun when there’s no challenge?
Whose job have you see your sight on in the future?
Honestly, I have no sight on anyone’s job at the moment. Some great advice I recently received was to look for the gaps in the market and try to address those gaps. I haven’t found my calling yet but slowly but surely, I will figure out my interests and maybe there’s a role out there for me or maybe one will be created.
Where do you turn for inspiration?
Professional inspiration – My co-workers.
Personal inspiration – Family and friends.
Life inspiration – Gary V, Dwight Schrute and anime.
Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you:
Not a gamer but I play a battle royale game on mobile and have been consistent for the last 5-6 years. I created a YouTube channel and used to post gameplay videos. Not anymore.
In fives years’ time I’ll be:
In five years time, I would like to see myself in a leadership position, a media expert and be making a positive impact in the media world.
