Mitch Robertson: sales executive at Paramount
Time in current role/time at the company:
I’ve been in my current role as sales executive for three years and at Paramount ANZ for almost five years.
How long have you been in the industry?
I’ve been in the industry for about five years. I started at MCN, then came across to Paramount ANZ when the Sales team was brought back in-house.
How did you get here? Was this always the plan?
Like most people in the industry, I just fell into it. I was applying for jobs when I finished Uni, and a friend from Ballarat mentioned there was a job at MCN I’d be suited to. I interviewed, was lucky enough to be successful, and here I am today. It definitely wasn’t the plan, but I’m very happy with how it has panned out.
Who is your right-hand person/who guides you day to day?
I’ve been lucky enough to work with many great people over the last five years, but my manager, Georgia Ratcliffe, has taught me a lot - from how to book a spot to how to use chopsticks at one of our many lunches. I appreciate everything she has done and continues to do for me.
What’s the best thing about the industry you work in?
I think the variety in my day-to-day is what I appreciate the most about the media industry. It’s a common saying throughout the industry, but the people also make it what it is. This industry is full of so many different personalities that you get to meet over the journey, which is always refreshing. That, and the regular events we get to attend. I’ve been lucky enough to go to the Melbourne Cup Carnival, Australian Formula One Grand Prix, Motor shows, the Australian Open, travel interstate and, of course, a long lunch or two… or three.
And the biggest challenge?
I think navigating your way through a period of a lot of change is always a challenge, which is what we are experiencing as an industry. It’s imperative to keep up with current trends and add to your knowledge, otherwise you’ll be left behind pretty quickly!
Whose job have you set your sights on in the future?
Chief sales officer would be nice… but who knows. A great thing about our industry is that there are so many different avenues for progression. I just plan to continue following my interests and see where it takes me.
Where do you turn for inspiration?
Dustin Martin. Also, friends and family.
Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?
I part-own a couple of racehorses.
In five years' time I'll be...
In a position of leadership! And in the Winners Circle at Flemington.
