Millie Mae Twort: Senior creative project manager at The Works
How long have you been in the industry?
I’ve been in the industry for 9 years
How did you get here? Was this always the plan?
I had a very different route into Advertising. I wanted to be a film producer so started looking into universities for film production, but this freaked my parents out. No one in my family had ever gone to university so they were convinced they would end up in debt paying off my university fees as they didn’t understand how the payment system worked - so they begged me to look for a job. I started looking at jobs to see what was out there and appease my parents with the view I’d still go to university once I finished school. I stumbled across a company that had just started up - they ran apprenticeships – a scheme where you work fulltime, learn on the job and complete your studies part time. They had some big clients on their portfolio and I managed to secure a job at Google.
Despite my teachers telling me it was the worst mistake I’d ever make I dropped out of school at 17 and went on to Google to become their youngest ever employee. Through my time working at Google I found my love for advertising. I met the owner of my first agency whilst working at Google and went to work for him as an Account Executive – I climbed up the ladder and the rest is history.
Who is your right-hand person/who guides you day to day?
My friend and colleague Lucy Batchelor is my right hand both inside and outside of work. She’s wise beyond her years and offers such great perspectives. I’m very lucky to work with someone every day who is such a great friend.
What’s the best thing about the industry you work in?
The people! I had a wobble in lockdown thinking is advertising the right job for me. I didn’t realise how much job satisfaction I get out of being surrounded by wonderful creative people every day. Fast forward to life now, being back in the office 3 days a week, and I love my job again.
And the biggest challenge?
A healthy work life balance, I’m a big believer of work should complement your life and not consume it, however I’m instinctively a yes person so I find saying no challenging.
Whose job have you set your sights on in the future?
Quentin Tarantino – I haven’t given up the dream of being a film director just yet
Where do you turn for inspiration?
I love reading, I use books a lot to learn about other people’s perspectives and experiences. I’m also prone to a TikTok rabbit hole.
Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?
I’m an open book and a huge chatter box, there’s no secrets with me.
In five years' time I'll be...
Wherever I’m meant to be. I don’t believe you should have a 5 year plan. Life provides so many interesting avenues you shouldn’t limit yourself to one.
