Mikaela Cherote: agency sales executive in NSW

Time in current role/time at the company?

I have been serving as a media agency sales executive for two and a half years, and I have been a part of Scentre Group for a total of five and a half years.

How long have you been in the industry?

Scentre Group was my first full-time job after university, so I have been in the industry for five and a half years.

How did you get here? Was this always the plan?

Interestingly, this career path was never part of my plan! Originally, I always had my sights set to work in the entertainment industry, studying film production and even pursuing acting. However, joining Scentre Group BrandSpace opened up new possibilities for me. Although I initially had limited knowledge about the industry and our businesses, I have grown to love my role and the connections I have built with clients. It was particularly a huge shift for me, especially coming from working in guest relations at Luna Park.

Who is your right-hand person/who guides you day to day?

The whole media team – on every level! Everyone is always so approachable and open to help, advise and share in whichever way they can. We really are one big team, and I’m truly grateful for their ongoing support and most of all their sense of humour, everyone’s always up for a laugh, which makes the workday seem less like work.

What’s the best think about the industry you work in?

The best thing about the industry is undoubtedly the people. Everyone is open, friendly, and genuinely dedicated to delivering the best for our clients. All of the opportunities to network and meet inspiring people is such a benefit of the industry!

And the biggest challenge?

One of the biggest challenges is demonstrating the effort and dedication put into a campaign, even when it doesn't result in a win. It can be challenging to showcase the value of your work and maintain motivation throughout the process.

Whose job have you set your sights on in the future?

I have set my sights on securing a leadership position within Scentre Group. I find it incredibly inspiring to witness the success stories of individuals who have climbed the ranks within this organisation.

I've always been passionate about the entertainment industry, particularly in film. If Christopher Nolan offered me a lead role, it’s safe to say I would consider it.

Where do you turn for inspiration?

Personally, my biggest inspiration is my mum. She’s been through it all, and yet remains the most caring, selfless, (sometimes scary), entertaining and strong person I know.

Professionally, our leader Scott Moore is a go-to for motivation! His energy, passion and enthusiasm are truly infectious! Plus, his office DJ sets are a vibe.

Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?

Here are two fun facts:

1. A character on a TV program currently sitting with Amazon will be loosely based on me (makes me nervous) – my closest claim to fame!

2. Secondly, I am ropes certified from my time working at a Texan Summer Camp. I can climb a telegraph pole with ease and do nothing when I get to the top; no practical use for that skill at all.

In five years’, time I’ll be…

Relaxing and enjoying my 10-year long service leave, hopefully in my Byron beach-side mansion, with husband Liam Hemsworth.
