Erica Mallet: Copywriter at BMF
Time in current role/time at the company:
One year at BMF
How long have you been in the industry?
I’ve been in the creative industry for 10 years but I’m one year old in advertising years! (Which I’m gonna say is kinda like dog years).
How did you get here? Was this always the plan?
My time in the creative industry has been centered around conveying ideas to people in a way that resonates with them. I’ve explored this in so many different mediums like radio, music, podcasting, and content creation. Working with brands through an agency seemed like an exciting new way to craft and refine this skill.
Who is your right-hand person/who guides you day to day?
My partner and art director Angel! She’s got a brilliant brain, and I love chatting with her about anything and everything. Sometimes that’s work, sometimes it’s arguing about how a zucchini would wear pants.
What’s the best thing about the industry you work in?
The people! There are so many funny, big-thinkers and I appreciate being surrounded by very smart creatives.
And the biggest challenge?
Sometimes having to kill your darlings.
Whose job have you set your sights on in the future?
I’m not role focussed, I’m skill focussed. I’m working towards honing a stronger skill set rather than a particular title. I’m open to anything in the future, so long as I get to create ideas, and I’m always improving.
Where do you turn for inspiration?
Comedy mostly! Or music - rap and hip hop.
Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?
I once dislocated my jaw by yawning. It got stuck open. Couldn’t swallow, so I was drooling everywhere. Had to go to the ER, where there were some very amused student trainees overseeing the Doctor popping it back.
In five years' time I'll be...
As passionate and inspired as I am now, hopefully!
