Our Young Gun profile takes a look at some of the young talent across the advertising, adtech, marketing and media sector in Australia. It aims to shed light on the varying roles, people and companies across the buzzing industry.
Today we speak to Ryvalmedia Performance Media Manage, Davina Ly.
Time in current role/time at the company:
Three months.
How long have you been in the industry?
Six years…time flies!
How did you get here? Was this always the plan?
I was originally studying business, but didn’t really have a clear idea of what I wanted to do. I switched over to Advertising, discovered the digital media industry (and my love for a good excel sheet) and never turned back! I actually remember presenting to our MD, Joey Pardillo, for one of our assignments. I later ended up getting a role at Carat working with him, and now we’re working together at Ryvalmedia again. We’ve come full circle!
Who is your right-hand person/who guides you day to day?
I’m very fortunate to be working with some brilliant people at Ryvalmedia. Special shout out to my team JD Henshaw, Edward Field and Hayley Major for helping me learn so much in the short time I’ve been here – and for the solid banter!
What’s the best thing about the industry you work in?
I think it’s a tie between the amazing people and the fact that it’s so fast-paced and ever changing. Also having the opportunity to work with and drive results for a range of different clients has been such a rewarding learning experience.
And the biggest challenge?
Trying to keep up with the fact that the industry is ever changing! Whether it’s adapting to a global pandemic, cookies getting phased out, or the Ads Manager interface being updated for the hundredth time. Sometimes the job pushes me out of my comfort zone as well, which can be a struggle, but has helped me grow so much.
Whose job have you set your sights on in the future?
I don’t know if there’s a specific role at the moment - I’d like to think that I could forge my own path. I want to keep an open mind, and keep learning and acquiring as many skills as I can. We’ll see where it takes me!
Where do you turn for inspiration?
The world around me – whether it’s music, movies, or people. I’m also lucky to be surrounded by wonderful friends, family, and my partner who inspires me to be the best version of myself.
My favourite advert is (and why):
The Mercedes Chicken ad. I don’t know why but that one still makes me giggle to this day. Who doesn’t love watching chickens do a body roll?
Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?
I feel like they already know quite a bit - I’m usually a pretty introverted person but it’s easy to chat with the wonderful group that they are. One thing everyone might not know is that I used to work in a studio as a jewellery maker. At some point I’ll figure out the jewellery side hustle I started working on in lockdown…
In five years' time I'll be:
Hopefully doing something I love, whether it’s in media or another industry! And maybe I’ll have finally figured out a way to get my cat to stop killing my houseplants.
