Claire Hughes: designer at The Idea Shed
Time in current role/time at the company:
Two years.
How long have you been in the industry?
Seven years.
How did you get here? Was this always the plan?
I have always loved to create, since I can remember. I grew up with an unconventional mind – excelling in subjects that required a different way of thinking. Creating is in my nature and has influenced my life’s direction.
Who is your right hand person/who guides you day to day?
My studio experience is profoundly supportive, it’s difficult to choose one person.
Guidance can come from anyone, and I have found in this industry, you will learn so much more if you set ego aside and acknowledge assistance from everyone around you.
What’s the best thing about the industry you work in?
I love how creativity challenges traditional ways of thinking by recognising limitations in life and breaking the mould to improve them. The creative industry is full of passionate individuals who want to make a difference and know how to have fun while doing it.
And the biggest challenge?
Not everyone is going to like your work. This is something that can be hard to stomach after putting so much of your energy and passion into a task. You put yourself out there, and sometimes they don’t bite back.
Whose job have you set your sights on in the future?
I don’t have sight on a particular job. I plan to absorb as much as I can as a young designer, and eventually forge my own path. The industry is ever-changing, a job I have my eyes set on today, could look very different in the future.
Where do you turn for inspiration?
Inspiration can come from unsuspecting places. Seeing the world is your best bet at finding inspiration. Having an open-mind and immersing yourself into new and different experiences will push your perspective and elevate your creative thinking. Our world is enriched with history, culture and beauty that will inspire you in many ways.
My favourite advert is (and why):
Deng Adut | Western Sydney University. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hPHQSinOys
Deng Adut’s inspiring story is told through a powerful montage of emotional clips, a moving soundtrack and impactful copy. It’s one that has stuck with me since the first time I saw it – and that is what makes a good ad. A memorable one.
Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?
I was deaf as a child. A short-term disability that I feel has made an impact on how I navigate through life. I am also dyslexic which is likely a result of this. My mind soaked up the world differently to other children around me. I believe my experience has influenced my creative direction in life - which I am very grateful for.
In five years' time I'll be:
Making a difference in a leadership role inspiring young guns and creating award winning work!
