In this series, AdNews spotlights young talent in the Australian media, marketing and advertising sector. This time it's Paramount ANZ account manager - ad sales, Cindy Yip.
Time in current role/time at the company:
I’ve been with Paramount ANZ as account manager – ad sales for one and a half years.
How long have you been in the industry?
Four years.
How did you get here? Was this always the plan?
This was kind of the plan! I’ve always wanted to work in TV as a kid. I was a massive Disney/Nickelodeon fan and always wanted to work for one of those companies. At Uni, I couldn’t figure out what I wanted to do as a career and a friend had convinced me to join her to try out advertising classes to fill our electives, and I fell in love. So, landing a career both at a TV network (especially one that owns Nickelodeon) and be in advertising, is a real dream come true.
Who is your right-hand person/who guides you day to day?
My GSM, Lena Rapley. Ever since she has started, she has been an absolute breath of fresh air. She is super supportive and patient with all my questions, from asking how I would approach difficult conversations all the way to wedding planning tips! Lena is definitely the kind of manager I would like to be in the future.
What’s the best thing about the industry you work in?
This definitely is a bit cheesy, but the best thing about the industry is the people! I love connecting with everyone around all my different interests, whether it is about food, books, or pop culture.
And the biggest challenge?
The biggest challenge is the ever-changing environment we work in and being able to keep up with it. Whether it is as simple as new programs that we are introducing, or new ad products across our digital platforms, or the changing media landscape, there is just so much to learn, but this is where I absolutely thrive. I love feeling like a student again learning about all this and utilising all this information to strengthen my conversations with clients.
Whose job have you set your sights on in the future?
Beverley McGarvey’s job! She’s an absolute inspiration as a female boss and a working mum.
Where do you turn for inspiration?
When I am stuck, I try to look outside of the media industry as I do find that I get a bit of tunnel vision. So, to get out of this mindset, I love to chat with friends that are in completely different industries like healthcare or finance to get a different perspective.
Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?
I lived in Japan for a year. When I finished high school, all I knew that I wanted to do was live overseas for a small stint, so I chose a degree that required to study overseas.
In five years time, I'll be:
Hopefully a GSM and owning a house in Sydney!
