Carlotta Chiavazza: Strategist at whiteGREY Melbourne.

Time in current role/time at company: 9 months.

How did you get here? Was this always the plan?
Good question. I got here because at Uni I didn’t know what to study exactly and I thought advertising would give me exposure to lots of different things. And the work produced looked really fun!

To me, advertising is a way to figure out what my plan is. Working in advertising means I get to take part in many different industries and ventures without committing to one specifically.

Who is your right-hand who guides you day to day?
Broadly it’s the whole team at whiteGREY Melbourne. It’s an environment that fosters every single one of us to really bring our whole selves to work, and that’s powerful. But my right-hand woman, I’m thrilled to say is Nomfundo Msomi. The best part is she helps me understand the bigger picture and how to how to make the most of each little milestone.

What’s the best thing about the industry you work in?
Collaboration with the diverse talent in the room and the younger talent that’s coming in hot to change the industry for the better. My other favourite thing about working in advertising is saying ‘I hate ads’ when watching YouTube with my friends.

And the biggest challenge?
Not letting rejection affect you but learning from it instead. We’re constantly feeling vulnerable when sharing ideas, writing stuff, raising our hands; that takes nerve, but I’m getting better at it. And in our office no idea is a bad idea. Everyone is encouraged to speak out and share their thoughts.

Whose job have you set your sight in the future?
I want to be doing strategy at Porsche.

Where do you turn for inspiration?
As a strategist, inspiration comes from living. But when I actively seek it, I do so from a few people in my life. It’s the friends who are never online, they have a brain that’s not been suffocated by all these opinions on screen so are able to think independently.

Otherwise, the places people turn to complain - YouTube video comments, twitter.

Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you
The only time I turn my camera off is when I’m eating.

In five years time I’ll be:
Aged 32 and bossing.
