Our Young Gun profile takes a look at some of the young talent across the advertising, adtech, marketing and media sector in Australia. It aims to shed light on the varying roles, people and companies across the buzzing industry.
Andrew Braysher: Digital manager at Carat.
Time in current role/time at the company: 2 Years.
How long have you been in the industry?
I've been working in the industry for about 7 years and have had the opportunity to work in areas such as investor relations, PR, creative and media production.
How did you get here? Was this always the plan?
Advertising was never the plan! I loved film in high school, but after graduating, I went to study Pharmacology (hoping to enter Medicine in postgrad). During my first semester of Uni, I became ill and had to drop out. Since film was always a passion of mine, I started working part-time at my cousin's creative agency and learned to tell the stories of various brands through film.
I started working in the digital team of a great marketing and PR company in Perth, which helped kickstart my career. I helped make a TV show in the height of the crypto boom about blockchain, cryptocurrency and tech start-ups.
Early on in my career, I was able to combine my passion for film, marketing, and advertising, which was an experience I still value greatly. Everything has continued to evolve, and while my 17-year-old dreams didn’t come to full fruition – the way my journey has unfolded so far has been exciting
Who is your right hand person/who guides you day to day?
I think day-to-day being a part of a team who are working to achieve great work makes all the difference. Right-hand people would certainly be Cameron Stewart for his technical guidance and willingness to listen to and give honest feedback on my ideas, and Sophie Park for challenging my assumptions and keeping me on schedule.
What’s the best thing about the industry you work in?
I really enjoy coming into a lively office and working on exciting projects with people who have completely different perspectives or experiences than me. Having a problem that is complex but working on a solution to meet the goal is really rewarding.
And the biggest challenge?
Learning when to say no. By learning, I mean I’m still learning hahaha. There are always so many great things to work on, but sometimes it’s hard to say no, even when it’s a project I could learn a lot on.
Whose job have you set your sights on in the future?
Hmm, that’s an interesting one. I don’t necessarily have a job position in mind but I’d love to be in a position where I can work with companies to develop media (and maybe creative) strategies that utilise attention-grabbing immersive experiences with new/emerging technology (e.g Filters, Machine Learning, VR/AR, Web 3.0).
Where do you turn for inspiration?
I listen to a lot of podcasts – my current two favourites are: The Prof G podcast, The Daily Stoic.
I also spend a lot of my free time learning new things on YouTube and reading classic stoic texts on Audible. My goal this year is to see how many times I can listen to ‘Meditations’ by Marcus Aurelius – It’s really grounding and helps contextualise the day-to-day, giving me the headspace to stay in the flow and dream of solutions to problems.
My favourite advert is:
The reading and writing hotline. The fact that I can still recall 1300 655 506 like 15+ years later astounds me.
