Young Guns: Alison Tanudisastro at The Guardian Australia

By AdNews | 26 October 2023

Young Gun profiles takes a look at the young talent across the Australian advertising, adtech, marketing and media sector. Aiming to shed light on the varying roles, people and companies across the buzzing industry.

Alison Tanudisastro: senior producer - Guardian Labs at The Guardian Australia

Time in current role/time at company:
Two and a half years.

How long have you been in the industry:
Publishing: four years
Advertising & Branding: six years

How did you get here? Was this always the plan?
I've loved magazines since I was a kid and always dreamed of working in a role where I could bring words and images together to tell a story. My tiger dad pushed me into studying accounting at uni instead. I was an auditor for a few years, before changing careers and working in advertising and branding, which included a two year stint in London. But luckily, I've slowly found my way back to something pretty close to what I had always wanted to do as a kid.

Who is your right-hand? Who guides you day to day?
I work very closely with our head of content, Sharnee Rawson, and content and strategy director, Justine O'Donnell, to lead the Guardian Labs team together.

What's the best thing about the industry you work in?
Publishing is constantly evolving, particularly when it comes to the influence of social media platforms and tech trends.

And the biggest challenge?
Adapting to the constant changes without losing our focus on and commitment to telling authentic brand stories that will engage our audience.

Whose job have you set your sights on for the future?
I have a feeling my future job might not be invented yet! As long as it involves collaboratively working with a diverse range of people who I can learn from and vice versa, and for an organisation with a purpose I believe in - then I'll be happy.

Where do you turn for inspiration?
Stepping away from all screens and going for a walk outside!

Tell us one thing people at your work don't know about you?
I topped the HSC Indonesian Continuers course in NSW back in the day (I'm Chinese-Indonesian so I might've had an unfair advantage).

In five year's time i'll be?
Confidently leading a happy and motivated team of individuals who feel valued and supported in their own careers.
