Adriana Catanese: performance executive at The Media Store
Time in current role/time at the company:
Two years at the company.
How long have you been in the industry?
Two years.
How did you get here? Was this always the plan?
After studying Commerce, Public Health and Health Promotion at university, I had my heart set on entering the health industry. It was through a recruitment agency I was connected with two The Media Store employees. From having zero knowledge of what a TARP or an MREC was, one interview later, they had me reconsidering my entire career path, where I soon found myself pivoting into the world of media. Over the past two years at The Media Store, I have been lucky to have had the opportunity to develop and refine my skills. I started as a traditional media assistant, transitioning to a digital media assistant, and finally, a recent promotion to performance executive.
Who is your right-hand person/who guides you day to day?
It has to be Annie Marendaz, The Media Store’s performance director. We first met in person late 2021 as lockdowns ended, and I have been mesmerised by her empowering, colourful, and disco-loving self ever since. She embodies everything I aspire to be: strong, determined and a leader in the industry. I leapt at the chance to transition into her team in mid-2022 and have since discovered many similarities, both being left-handed and barracking for the mighty Geelong Cats. Annie has taught me so much, both personally and professionally, everyone needs an Annie in their life!
What’s the best thing about the industry you work in?
As cheesy as it sounds, the people. Working at The Media Store has connected me with so many great individuals and opportunities. Thanks to them, I have become empowered and curious and couldn’t have stayed in the same agency for over two years if I didn’t love the energy of the industry and the people I am surrounded by. It truly is a great place to work with a genuine care of each other and an eagerness to make a difference.
And the biggest challenge?
Our industry constantly evolves with new technology, platforms, and formats, so staying on top of and being educated in all things media can be challenging. Opportunities like lunch and learns, ongoing training, support and the collaborative environment The Media Store offers help to address this industry-wide challenge.
Where do you turn for inspiration?
When I need creativity, I always find myself scrolling on TikTok. I know very Gen Z of me, but in a five minute scroll, you can be exposed to a wide variety of user-generated content that another platform couldn’t curate for you.
Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?
I love the TV show Home and Away, and my love for TV is why I was attracted to the industry. Who said linear TV is dead?
Whose job have you set your sights on in the future?
This shouldn’t come as a surprise, but Annie Marendaz (with a much less colourful and sparkly wardrobe).
In five years' time, I'll be:
I aim to delve deeper into female leadership at The Media Store within the next five years. Having been mentored by inspiring women at TMS to date, I wish to pass on wisdom and knowledge to those after me, continuing to see women in technology succeed.
