Our Young Gun profile takes a look at some of the young talent across the advertising, adtech, marketing and media sector in Australia. It aims to shed light on the varying roles, people and companies across the buzzing industry.

Today we speak to Ryvalmedia performance media executive Hayley Major.

Time in current role/time at the company:
Since Ryvalmedia started almost a year ago (and I was with JBZ Digital before RyanCap acquired it).

How long have you been in the industry?
Two years.

How did you get here? Was this always the plan?
After leaving school, the media industry was never part of the plan! I actually started a Science degree and had always thought I'd go into Veterinary Science. However, I quickly realised it was not for me, and I transferred to Business. From there, Marketing felt like a great fit, becoming my major during my studies at Monash University. After I had graduated, I was lucky enough that Marcus Betschel took a chance on me, and I've been with the team ever since.

Who is your right-hand person?
Jonathan 'JD' Henshaw (Ryvalmedia digital director) has been my mentor and go-to-guy ever since I joined the team, and I know he always has my back!

What's the best thing about the industry you work in?
It's constantly changing, and every day is different. Especially with the challenges of the past two years, you must always try to think of a new way that you can deliver the best results despite lockdowns/border closures/change in consumer behaviour – what worked in the past is no longer reliable for what will work in the future.

And the biggest challenge?
Ironically, it's probably the same as the best thing! Because the industry is constantly evolving, you need to be on your toes and continually innovating to ensure you can assist every client in achieving their goals.

Whose job have you set your sights on in the future?
I love being a part of the Ryvalmedia team and look forward to continuing my growth here. I guess you could say I have my sights set on the roles above me, and I'm lucky enough to be encouraged by our leadership team to keep me motivated on my personal growth and development.

Where do you turn for inspiration?
My family and partner play a prominent role in my life and are always there to help me order my thoughts. They inspire me to be my best and remind me to always look at the bigger picture.

Moreover, in the industry the leadership team of Ryvalmedia provide great inspiration through the breadth of their experience – I’m lucky to have such a wealth of knowledge within my own team.

My favourite advert is:
The Banana Boat ad – The kid is adorable, and that jingle is so catchy that it will be stuck in your head for hours. The moment anyone mentions sunscreen, I think of this ad every time.

Tell us one thing people at work don't know about you?
They probably know pretty much everything about me; I love a chat! Some members may not know that when I was seventeen years old, I was lucky enough to win a scholarship to study in Germany for a month with other teenagers from around the world.
