Our Young Gun profile takes a look at some of the young talent across the advertising, adtech, marketing and media sector in Australia. It aims to shed light on the varying roles, people and companies across the buzzing industry.
Today we speak to Hannah Mannion, SEO manager at Indago.
Time at the company:
Just over two years at Indago.
How long have you been in the industry?
Five and a half years.
How did you get here? Was this always the plan?
I did a degree in Early Childhood Studies but ultimately it wasn’t where my passion ended up being. I had a keen interest in advertising and marketing and I followed campaigns and industry news, so I decided to put myself out there and see if I could make a career of it. I sent off my CV and landed an internship at a boutique digital marketing agency. Next thing I knew, I was packing up my life in Sheffield and moving 170 miles to London to give it a shot. It taught me a lot, including that I’d made the right call by pursuing the new career path. From there I decided to specialise in SEO and got a job at a large media agency in London. My career in SEO and digital marketing helped me fulfill my lifelong dream of moving to Australia, too.
Who is your right-hand person/who guides you day to day?
My manager Darren is a great leader and manager who I have learnt a lot from at my time at Indago so far. He’s a legend, very generous with his knowledge and supportive of the team.
What’s the best thing about the industry you work in?
I love that it changes all the time; no two days are ever the same. Google’s algorithm and ever-shifting search behaviours mean I always have to stay on the pulse and keep up with the latest changes. That works for me because I enjoy learning new ways of marketing and testing what does and doesn’t work.
And the biggest challenge?
Making sure you are serving all clients and driving results is a challenge. Because I work across multiple clients, I’ve had to become a master at effective time management. Keeping up with the changing landscape and competitors is also a challenge but, as I said, one that I enjoy.
Whose job have you set your sights on in the future?
I would love to one day either be running a team as the head of SEO or working for myself to give me the freedom to work in different locations across the world (I love to travel!)
Where do you turn for inspiration?
My peers! I am constantly learning from the management team and senior players in my field. They inspire me every day to learn more and progress in the industry.
My favourite advert is:
The annual Christmas John Lewis adverts in the UK – always a tear jerker!
Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?
I can play the violin.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Hopefully leading a team independently or working for myself and travelling the world.
