Ashley Woodrow

Our Young Gun profile takes a look at some of the young talent across the advertising, adtech, marketing and media sector in Australia. It aims to shed light on the varying roles, people and companies across the buzzing industry.

Today we speak to 10 Perth commercial & digital partnerships executive - Effect, Ashley Woodrow.

Time at the company:
One and a half years.

How long have you been in the industry?
One and a half years in Australia and more than six years in the UK media industry.

How did you get here? Was this always the plan?
I started off selling newspaper subscriptions for The Daily Telegraph in a call centre in the UK. After a year or so I was asked if I would like to go to head office to try my hand at selling advertising space in the newspaper. The rest snowballed from there.

After I started in the industry, I knew this was something I wanted to continue to pursue. I had always planned to move to Australia, however, I never thought I would be lucky enough to land a role at 10 ViacomCBS.

Who is your right-hand person/who guides you day to day?
I am guided day to day by the team that I work with. Our Perth sales director, Paul Townsend, and group sales manager, Georgina Pym, have been extremely supportive in my transition to the Australian media industry. The whole team are extremely positive and passionate which makes it a great environment to learn and work in.

What’s the best thing about the industry you work in?
There are a number of things that I love about the industry; the networking and entertainment side is always a plus. But it’s the forever-changing and fast-paced landscape that keeps me interested and on my toes.

And the biggest challenge?
The industry never stands still, there is always something bigger and better on the horizon. The greatest challenge is staying on top of this.

Whose job have you set your sights on in the future?
I love the digital space and digital aspect of my role, so I think I would have to aim high and say director of digital sales for the network.

Where do you turn for inspiration?
I am very lucky to have a very supportive partner, friendship group and family, but I think my mum could top the list. She is without a doubt one of the strongest people I know and has battled through a lot without ever giving up. That gives me inspiration.

My favourite advert is:
Hands down, it would have to be the black and white Guinness surfer advert. I remember seeing it in one of my mum’s pubs when I was a young boy, and it has stuck with me forever. Check it out:

Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?
I absolutely love cooking and experimenting by creating my own recipes.

In five years' time I'll be:
Hopefully a few steps closer to that director of digital sales role, living beachside in WA with my partner Megs and our family.
