GroupM has taken the extraordinary step of taking the UK Government to court after losing its multi-million dollar account to Dentsu Aegis' Carat.

Reported in the Financial Times this morning, the WPP unit took the government to court after losing the pitch, but its reasons for doing so are so far confidential.

GroupM applied for and received a court order preventing the release of information surrounding the case to the public, fearing "the Particulars of Claim contained sensitive and confidential pricing information" tendered to the government as part of the pitch.

People are able to make an application to have the court details unveiled, but they must make a formal application after giving GroupM's lawyers two days' notice.

While the details of the case remain confidential, the UK cabinet office told the paper that it was confident that its pitch process was throrough and robust, adding that it used an independent media auditor as part of the process.

The pitch for the government business, about £400 million ($A735 million) wrapped up in September following a six-month process.
