Purpose-driven social media app WeAre8 is closing its local operations in Australia.

Instead, marketing will be run from offshore.

WeAre8 is an advertising platform that pays users to watch ads. People using the WeAre8 app can choose to watch opt-in brand videos and receive payments into their 8Wallet to either keep or pay it forward to charity partners.

The number of employees affected isn't known.

Local CMO Luke Robinson and managing director Danika Johnston are still listed on LinkedIn as being a part of WeAre8.

Lizzie Young, the now former APAC CEO and global growth officer for WeAre8, left the company a year ago after less than two years.

“As a result of the momentum in the UK, Europe, and the US, we are centralising the marketing functions into our London HQ and will no longer have any full time employees in Australia,” said Zoe Kalar, CEO & founder.

“We are grateful for the amazing work our team in Australia has done over the last two years.

“The business and app in Australia remain fully open and we continue to provide value and support to our brand clients, agencies, communities, publishers, impact partners and Citizens in Australia.

“We are also in discussions with key media partners to accelerate local sales across our existing and new products.

“These include our in-app programmatic ad delivery, our in-app CPM feed and our 'Golden 8' publisher ad network, that enables 10M+ Australian citizens to watch an ad on Premium Publisher websites, while sharing economics with Publishers and Charities.

“Please note that this is all in addition to our core ad product that delivers social ads in high attention, fully completed (30 secs) way, all while sharing the majority of the ad money with Australians at scale.”
