Vodafone: Hi, how can I help?
Watchdog: Hi, my name is [gives a cunning alias] and I'm currently on a $70 per month plan and was wondering how much Stan I could stream under that account...
Vodafone: Let me have a look for you...it looks like on a $70 plan you could download 4GB.
Watchdog: Realistically, how much could I stream using a 4G system?
Vodafone: If you were streaming 4G you would be downloading 30mb per minute.
Watchdog: Is that high or low definition?
Vodafone: It will default to low or medium quality.
Watchdog: So that's about two hours a month not taking into account any other data usage. That doesn't sound like a lot. Do you have any guidance on how much data people use day-to-day? Obviously the Stan access would be seperate to that...
Vodafone: I can't really answer that question. Every customer is different.
Watchdog: Still, two-odd hours a month.
Vodafone: The $70 a month plan is our minimum though, and there are data packs you can add on if you need more.
THE FINAL RECKONING:
Watchdog reckons that if you're streaming movies and TV via a smartphone on a 4G network, you're doing it wrong. Nonetheless, the implict promise of a streaming nirvana probably isn't real yet.
