Social distancing is the buzzword of the coronavirus pandemic.

It's about increasing the physical distance between people and, therefore, lessen the chance of COVID-19 passing from individual to individal.

But keeping your distance isn't new.

This video is based on an article by Einav Rabinovitch-Fox, professor of history at Case Western Reserve University, a private research university in Cleveland, Ohio.

"As a historian who writes about the political and cultural meanings of clothing, I know that fashion can play an important role in the project of social distancing, whether the space created helps solve a health crisis or keep away pesky suitors," he writes.

"Clothing has long served as a useful way to mitigate close contact and unnecessary exposure. In this current crisis, face masks have become a fashion accessory that signals, Stay Away.”
