The state government in Victoria says it will stop print advertising in metropolitan newspapers

The ban applies from July, except for any statutory requirements to advertise in print.

The Victorian government spent $150.6 million on advertising in the 2021-22 financial year

Reports say the ban doesn’t extend to digital, television advertising and will include advertising on newspaper websites.

The move has been positioned as a recalibration of ad spend.

‘We make judgments about where the audience is and we’re not making any apology for focusing our efforts much more online, digital, television," premier Dan Andrews told reporters today.

‘‘That’s where the audience is, that’s where the return on investment for taxpayers is."

The Australian reported that Andrews denied the decision was related to critical coverage in the Herald Sun and The Age during the 2022 state election.

Victoria late last year committed to newspaper advertising in the regions
