Dr Paul Priday, a stalwart in the advertising world, passed away last week following a battle with cancer. He was aged 71.

After starting his career at JWT in London, he went on to many things in Australian advertising.

Priday co-founded of Begg Dow Priday in the 80s and went on to teach advertising at Sydney University for many years.

As a copywriter his work spanned television and print and he was a long term consultant for King Furniture founder David King.

He was also a chair of AWARD. Priday's family request that anyone wishing to send well wishes, donate to The Unicorn Foundation rather than sending flowers.

Nearly $10,000 has been rasied so far and tributes have flooded in, with one saying: "Vale Dr Paul Priday, an inspirational lecturer, creative powerhouse and authentic human being."

Following a long career in advertising, Priday later undertook a PHD exploring the gender diversity within agencies at  Sydney Uni's Department of Gender & Cultural Studies. His thesis saw him do in-depth interviews with McCann and M&C Saatchi to explore women in creative agencies.

In it he said: “It becomes clear that the creative department is a hierarchical ‘men’s club’ that through masculine cultural capital sanctions masculine privilege whilst collapsing traditional notions of class. My analysis identifies advertising as an always already male gendered occupation that is an intensely aggressive and competitive workplace where fluid power relations are used to define the rules of the game and the importance of winning.”

David Morris, founder of Weeks Morris Osborn, called him a “a good friend and a champion of creativity”.

A celebration will be held in late June in The Refectory at Sydney University's Business School.
