UM Australia has promoted Adam Russell to the newly created role of general manager Melbourne.
The news comes after UM made the Melbourne managing director role redundant last month, seeing Gareth Nicholls exit the business after eight years.
UM Australia CEO Anathea Ruys said Gareth was a very respected member of UM’s team who leaves behind a tremendous legacy and has always provided valuable counsel to his clients and commitment to the business during his tenure.
“Melbourne’s business is in great shape with a team of talented professionals supporting the agency’s client roster," Ruys said.
"I would like to thank Gareth for his energy, passion and contribution to the role and wish him all the very best for his future.”
Russell, as well as the new role, retains his current remit as client lead on key Melbourne clients including Kmart and OnePass.
Russell joined UM in 2017, most recently holding the role of group account director. With nearly 15 years’ experience in media, he has experience in multiple categories including FMCG, retail, alcoholic beverages, automotive, utilities, wearables and tech sectors.
Ruys said Russell strives to be better at his craft every day and true example of someone who has created his own path through honing his skills via hard work, creativity and a healthy ambition to succeed.
“Adam is well respected in the Melbourne media industry and will be an excellent leader of UM Melbourne’s talented team," she said.
"As many people know I am a true Melburnian with a soft spot for both the city and its people and I am looking forward to working alongside Adam as he and his team continue to build on the amazing award-winning, creative work they already do for clients including Kmart, OnePass, Vanguard, AGL, HBF and Seek among others.
"His naturally curious mind means he is a creative problem solver enabling him to design commercially-driven solutions for our clients: pivotal for success in our industry.
“I am delighted he has taken on this expanded leadership role and I have absolutely no doubt he will continue to lead the agency to success."
Russell said his promotion represented the culmination of years of commitment and dedication to the agency, its team and clients and he was looking forward to the additional responsibility and the opportunities that come with the role.
“For me, turning up to work is all about being the best you can be and sharing your commitment to the job with your team and clients," he said.
"The media industry is such a diverse and creative environment where people from all walks of life can establish a fantastic career; and by taking on this new role, I am especially excited about the expanded opportunities I will have to mentor and coach the industry’s next generation of professionals. It’s a privilege to be offered this leadership role, I can’t wait to make a difference.”
Russell's promotion is effective April 1, 2024. He joins UM’s SLT and will report directly to CEO Anathea Ruys.
