Acclaimed gymnast Simone Biles and Queer Eye star Jonathan Van Ness memorably meet-up in a new commercial for Uber Eats, which has been created by independent agency Special Group Australia.
This marks the agency’s second celebrity rivalry for the delivery app in the US, following a series of spots that pitted Sir Patrick Stewart against Mark Hamill in a verbal food fight.
The new spot, Flip Out, features gymnastics fanboy Van Ness geeking out over Olympic gold medalist Biles. His enthusiasm propels him to try to tumble like Biles, with humorous results.
Biles, the most decorated American gymnast, dominated the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, winning individual golds in the all-around, vault and floor competitions and United States team gold as part of the Final Five team.
Van Ness rocketed to stardom on the Netflix reboot of Queer Eye as resident grooming expert.
“Simone Biles and Jonathan Van Ness were the perfect fit for our second spot - a reigning gymnastics champion and a mega-fan with some impressive moves himself," says Uber Eats head of marketing, U.S. & Canada, Georgie Jeffreys.
"We hope the unexpected pair once again brings joy to viewers.”
The campaign will run across the U.S. and Canada on channels including TV, social, radio, digital and OOH.
To produce the campaign, Special Group Australia worked with a local team on the ground in the U.S.
The commercial was shot following social-distancing protocols in Los Angeles using a small crew.
“We’re excited to bring the second execution of Uber Eats’ Tonight, I’ll be Eating campaign to North America," says Special Group Australia founding partner Cade Heyde.
"We can’t wait to watch the platform continue to drive conversation and provide great entertainment.”
Special Group Australia launched the Tonight I'll Be Eating brand platform for Uber Eats in Australia in 2017.
Since then, it has starred unlikely cultural icons sharing a meal together including Sharon Strezlecki and Kim Kardashian, Ray Martin and Lee Lin Chin, and John Farnham, Jimmy Barnes and Anh Do.
