Twitter has banned advertisments which contradict the science of climate change.

"We know that protecting the environment is something that people on Twitter care about, and we’re always thinking about other ways to serve these conversations," says Twitter.

The climate conversation on Twitter has grown by more than 150% since 2021.

Usage of terms such as “restoring” and “rebalancing” have grown 60%, discussion around waste reduction has increased by more 100%, and decarbonisation by more than 50%.

"Misleading advertisements on Twitter that contradict the scientific consensus on climate change are prohibited, in line with our inappropriate content policy," the social media platform says in a blog.

"We believe that climate denialism shouldn’t be monetised on Twitter, and that misrepresentative ads shouldn’t detract from important conversations about the climate crisis. This approach is informed by authoritative sources, like the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Assessment Reports.

"We recognise that misleading information about climate change can undermine efforts to protect the planet. In the coming months, we’ll have more to share on our work to add reliable, authoritative context to the climate conversations happening on Twitter."
