Australian TV shows and news will get an audience boost as a federal government's strategy expands broadcasting content for Indo-Pacific viewers.
The Indo-Pacific Broadcasting Strategy is investing more than $68 million over five years to strengthen Australia's media engagement across the Indo-Pacific.
$28.4 million will continue to support the PacificAus TV program, providing access to Australian commercial television programs, such as Lego Masters to Home and Away, to Pacific Island broadcasters.
The strategy will also increase the capacity of Australian outlets to report on their affairs - enhancing access to trusted and informative sources of media.
The ABC is receiving $40.5 million investment over five years to create new content, grow digital engagement and ongoing support for media partners in the Pacific, Southeast Asia and South Asia.
The government is also reviewing a restoration of Australian radio broadcasting in the Pacific, options to continue the PacificAus TV program and options to maximise the impact of Australian taxpayer investment in the SBS in the Pacific media context.
The news may provide some relief for TV outlets, which see decreasing linear audiences and decreasing advertising spend.
