The New York Times' new brand campaign from Droga5 has been slammed by US President Donald Trump.

The campaign, which includes a huge billboard, as well as local and national TV ads, digital, social media and print advertising, focuses on the importance of the truth, and the independent journalists’ role in getting to it.

The TV spot is the first ad the newspaper has ever aired during the Oscars.

Just three days after the ads were rolled out, Trump took to Twitter to say: “For the first time the failing @nytimes will take an ad (a bad one) to help save its failing reputation. Try reporting accurately and fairly.”

The tweet has been liked nearly 70,000 times and has been re-tweeted 15,000, but not everyone agrees with Trump and many were quick to hop to the newspaper's defence.

As announced last month, The New York Times appointed Damien Cave as its Australia bureau chief and Jacqueline Williams as its first locally based journalist as it labels Australia its “next frontier”. Cave was previously the deputy national editor for digital at The New York Times for more than 12 years.

The US-based site is also on the hunt for new staff Down Under, including a graphics editor, an editorial assistant, a Sydney based reporter and an audience growth editor.
