TikTok went dark in the US, with many writing the social media platform’s obituary at the weekend, but turned the lights back on with a thank you to president-elect Donald Trump.

The short form video app shut for 170 million American users on Saturday night just before a law to ban it was due to come into force.

The bipartisan bill was formed following concerns the personal data of Americans was being shared with Chinese authorities.

The outgoing administration of Joe Biden had said that any action “to implement the law” must fall to Trump who takes office on Monday US time.

Trump then said he would extend the period of time before the law took effect to allow a deal to “protect national security”.

"I would like the United States to have a 50% ownership position in a joint venture," he said.

TikTok started restoring service.

“We thank President Trump for providing the necessary clarity and assurance to our service providers that they will face no penalties providing TikTok to over 170 million Americans and allowing over 7 million small businesses to thrive,” said TikTok.

“It’s a strong stand for the First Amendment and against arbitrary censorship. We will work with President Trump on a long-term solution that keeps TikTok in the United States.”
