Top 10 ad complaints for 2017

Ultra Tune continues to top the list of the most complained about advertisements of 2017.

More than 6,300 complaints were received by the Advertising Standards Bureau (ASB) in 2017, with nearly a third of these relating to advertisements in the top 10 list.

Meat and Livestock Australia also made it into the top ten for its religious ad featuring Lord Ganesha, which was recently banned by the ASB after months of campaigning from the Indian community.

Sportsbet's controversial ad featuring Ben Johnson also made the list.

ASB CEO Fiona Jolly says the new codes introduced last year around wagering has seen three of the top 10 ads come from betting brands.

“The need for the Code has been demonstrated – with the community taking advantage of the self-regulation system’s ability to adapt to emerging community concerns," she says.

Under the new code, an ad from betting brand Neds was banned for promoting excessive participation.

Language was another key concern in three advertisements on the list, from AAMI and two separate ads from YouFoodz.

“Advertisements with language that people would not like to hear their children repeating will often receive large numbers of complaints and even more so if the advertisement depicts a child using the bad language," Jolly says.

Other advertisements in the list raised concerns about issues such as sex, sexuality and nudity and discrimination in advertising.
