Social media group TikTok has shed jobs in Australia as part of a global round of redundancies, AdNews can confirm.

The cuts, first reported by The Information, said TikTok will disband its global operations team, with cuts affecting teams that handle user support, operations, content and marketing.

The global layoffs will hit about 1,000 people, reports say.

TikTok ANZ would not confirm the number of roles going in Australia.

"Just like all companies, we assess our business on an ongoing basis and make necessary adjustments as part of our strategy for continued growth," a TikTok spokesperson told AdNews.

"Australia is an important market for TikTok and currently employs hundreds of people in offices in Sydney and Melbourne."

The short-form video app is banned in some countries, with America potentially joining the list as President Biden signed a law in April that gives owner ByteDance up to a year to fully divest from TikTok or face a nationwide ban.

Across the media industry, hundreds of jobs have been cut in the past few weeks particularly to marketing and sales departments.

Seven West Media dropped 100 roles, Nine has 200 job cuts in sight, News Corp had over 80 and SCA also has cut.

The companies have all blamed a stubborn slide in the local advertising market and the halt in the flow of payment for news from giant social media platform Meta.
