Australia has banned the Chinese-owned social media platform TikTok from federal government devices.

Attorney general Mark Dreyfus ordered the ban after advice from intelligence and security agencies.

This follows similar decisions by Australia's allies including the US, Canada, the UK and New Zealand following questions over the app's security and that it could be used by a foreign power.

"Today I authorised the secretary of the Attorney-General’s Department to issue a mandatory direction under the Protective Security Policy Framework to prohibit the TikTok app on devices issued by Commonwealth departments and agencies," he said in a statement.

"The direction will come into effect as soon as practicable.

"Exemptions will only be granted on a case-by-case basis and with appropriate security mitigations in place.
