Ikea Australia has awarded Three Drunk Monkeys its $9.7m creative account, beating Clemenger BBDO in a final two-way shoot out.

Three Drunk Monkeys replaces Host as the incumbent on the account across the Queensland, New South Wales and Victorian markets. Host declined to repitch for the business in October.

Ikea is about to embark on an aggressive expansion plan which will see two new stores open in late 2011 - one in Sydney and one in Melbourne - and a total of nine stores by 2015.

Ikea marketing manager Rebecca Darley said: "Throughout the process Three Drunk Monkeys demonstrated an ability to bring fresh thinking and new ideas to our business. They have a talented team and we are looking forward to developing their ideas further to help the IKEA brand realise its potential in this market."

Ikea spent $9.7 million on main media advertising in the 12 months to July 2010, up from $8 million in the prior period, according to Nielsen.

Media, which is handled by MediaCom and Match, is unaffected by the appointment. Direct and digital marketing agency Lavender continues to oversee the brand's loyalty program.
