AdNews brings the stories of those working from home (WFH) in the advertising and media industry during the coronavirus crisis.
Tom McMullan is associate creative director at Digitas:
How are you dealing with the silence?
I don’t know if you’d call endless Zooms silence, but we’re dealing with the remoteness the same way we always have – finding new ways to connect. That means connecting over our shared fitness regimes through #lunch-training: a Slack channel in which we post our workouts and a selfie after (as proof) and encourage others when they do the same. It means connecting through long-forgotten apps buried in our phone via our Words With Friends tournament. And it means sharing a quarantini every
Thursday arvo on a company-wide call to toast the world ending.
What’s the upside?
It’s tough talking about an upside when being able to "make the most of the lockdown" is very much a class privilege. But I will say that I have a five-month-old, and being able to work mere metres away from him is a blessing that I’m not taking for granted. I was there when he tried solids for the first time. And I’m there when the dog wakes him up and needs a hand to hold to get back to sleep.
The downside?
Anyone else worrying about their eyes?
How are you using the commuting time saved?
I have proper mornings now. Do walk. Family time. Breakfast. Exercise. Like I said before it’s a privilege and a blessing, and the worst thing we can do is waste it.
I am looking forward to being back in the office because …
I miss the horizon.
