AdNews brings the stories of those working from home (WFH) in the advertising and media industry during the coronavirus crisis.
Colin Barnard is commercial director at Criteo.
How are you dealing with the silence?
I am lucky to have a wonderful partner who is home with me during the day and we’ve been spending more time than ever together which is fantastic including the chance to have breakfast and lunch together during the week. Work is keeping me exceptionally busy as we pivot our business to our clients’ changing needs and I am probably involved in more meetings than ever before with some days six to eight hours spent on Zoom!
What’s the upside?
I am probably more connected than ever with my colleagues around the globe and we’ve been collaborating more than before. Plus there’s not crazy logistics finding meeting rooms for everyone…
On the home front, I’ve spent a lot more time on WhatsApp video with friends and family outside of Australia. Even my Dad of 80 has WhatsApp on his phone!
The downside?
The week is less nine to five and I’ve been getting up for 6.30am meetings with US colleagues and hopping on to Zoom calls at 9pm with Paris teams. Managing work on/off time has been tougher but I feel less guilty about taking an hour for lunch or doing a bit of life admin during the day. On a personal note, I was supposed to be in Colombia and putting on the final touches to my planned wedding there (which was scheduled for 25th April). I love travelling and I would have gotten to see my friends and family in person so it’s been tough to put that off.
How are you using the commuting time saved?
I’ve been taking time to exercise outside to ensure I get out each day, so swapping my 20 minute walk to work with a 20 minute walk around by the Harbour in Pyrmont.
I am looking forward to being back in the office because…
I really miss the spontaneous interaction with my team, the camaraderie and energy as well as the Friday afternoon beers and celebrating the week’s achievements.
