The season 15 premiere of reality home improvement program, Nine's The Block, has taken out the top spot in primetime overnight, drawing in 991,000 metro viewers.

The launch was down from its 2018 premiere, which set the highest debut numbers since 2014, with 1.16 million metro viewers tuning in.

However, when taking into account regional viewership, last night's episode's managed to reach 1.33m viewers nationally.

Nine revealed the sponsors for the show last week, with the likes of hipages, AGL and Lite N' Easy joining as new partners.

However, the show was able to hold off a ratings resurgence from Seven's Australia's Got Talent, which bounced back from declining ratings last week, drawing in 819,000 viewers.

Ten's Australian Survivor was unable to keep up, reaching just above 600,000 metro viewers, drawing in a total of 630,000.

Over on the multichannel, Nine cleaned up with its coverage if The Ashes, which aired on 9Gem. The first session of day four, which saw Australia storm back into the game with tonnes from Steve Smith and Matthew Wade, drew in 566,000 metro viewers.

The lunch and session two broadcasts also drew in a further 429,000 and 399,000 viewers, respectively.

In the overnight main channel battle, the race to top spot was close, with Nine securing the victory with a 20.7% share, followed by Seven with 19.1%. Ten fell to fourth place with a 10% share, narrowly beaten by the ABC, which had 11%.

However, Nine dominated the overall networks audience share, taking a massive 39.3%, as 9Gem delivered a 12.9% audience share. Seven came in second with 25.6%.

The Block, Australia's Got Talent and Australian Survivor all return in primetime tonight, while the final day of The Ashes game one will also air on 9Gem.
