Australians, like the rest of the world, are obsessed with Wordle, according to Sensor Tower,  a mobile app market intelligence company.

Eugene Du Plessis, Regional Director of Sensor Tower says “Global mobile game revenue surged during the start of the pandemic, seeing its largest year on year growth in early 2020.

"Role play games (RPG) continue to be the largest genre and this has provided huge potential for marketers, allowing them to gamifying their brand experience with a captive audience in an ever competitive media landscape of screens.

“More recently, 6-guess games spurred by ‘wordle-mania’ which has taken Australia by storm has allowed gaming developers to jump on consumers’ fascination with this genre, showing you don’t need to reinvent the gaming wheel to be successful. We’ve even seen bogus Wordle apps rise to the top of the download charts.

“Tougher times may be ahead though with mobile game revenue declining year on year for the first time in history earlier this year.

"We’re also starting to see a strong synergy between ad removal and subscription monetisation making it harder for marketers to get cut through to their core audience.

"Despite this, the mobile gaming industry still provides rich opportunities for advertisers. The esports category will particularly be one to watch in Australia this year with revenue set to soar.”
