The Sydney Morning Herald has emerged as the most read news title of the last 12 months, according to Total News readership figures from Roy Morgan.
With a cross-platform readership of 7.385 million readers in the 12-month period ending December 2023, the Monday to Friday print edition recorded an average issue readership of 401,000, while Saturday’s print edition had annual growth of 6% with 510,000 readers.
The Age, also owned by Nine, came in second, with a cross platform readership of 4.8 million in the 12-month period ending December 2023. The Monday to Friday print edition recorded growth of 2% year-on-year - to record a readership of 281,000, while the Saturday edition saw annual growth of 3% with 431,000 print readers.
97% (or 21.4 million) of Australians aged 14+ are consuming news in any given month, the Roy Morgan data revealed.
Further analysis of the results reveals state/territory mastheads are enjoying large readership numbers outside their local markets due to digital accessibility, with most state/territory mastheads effectively doubling their reach with inter-state audiences.
ThinkNewsBrands CEO, Vanessa Lyons, says the readership figures show Total News Publishing has a vast, extremely engaged and economically resilient audience, right across the news media channel.
“Across all markets, home state-based readership forms a solid foundation, but this is significantly boosted by readership across the nation," she says.
