Super Bowl 2023 - 'That Premature Electrification ad was too close to the bone'

It’s Super Bowl season, which means it’s opinion season.

Like a twitter version of The Purge, it’s the one time of year where every single person on earth is encouraged to applaud, berate and rank their fav and least fav ads of the Super Bowl, guilt-free.

And we mean everyone; @JJ_Chooseday said “That Premature Electrification ad was too close to the bone.” @MFuCEO “Everything Danny McBride does is hilarious. Until now.” And @LaNinaLovin added “40 years of Grease magic undone in 30 seconds. Thanks John Travolta.”

And with that, here are a few more opinions in the form of our top 5 Super Bowl picks.

TUBI - Interface Interruption.
This is so infuriatingly good. And like so many infuriatingly good ideas, it’s founded on a lovely, simple human insight. It's an incredibly un-Super Bowl ad. We can only imagine how much string-pulling must have gone on behind the scenes, but it comes off so bloody effortlessly in an ocean of celebrity-packed budget-busting commercials. And, it’s all achieved in under 15 seconds, making the mental image of millions of people yelling at one another from their couches all across America even better.

Pepsi - Great acting or great taste
Breaking the 4th wall, self-awareness and Ben Stiller. These are all things we need more of in advertising. For a product that’s all about taste, we loved how the team dodged the lifestyle tropes and took a far more self-referential approach. ‘Wow, it's really good. Or was I just acting?’ The writing, the production and even the CTA in these ads are quite lovely.

Why not an EV? | GM x Netflix
Last year, GM launched their ‘Everybody in” platform, committing to a fully electric future. And this year they are following through, not just on the production line, but in culture, thanks to their new sponsorship agreement with Netflix. And the cracking initiative was followed up with a cracking ad, doing justice to all the Netflix franchises they had access to with on-point references, great gags and great use of Will Ferrel.

Squarespace: The Singularity
The first thing that struck us about the Squarespace commercial is that it stands out like dog’s bollocks from the rest of the Super Bowl spots. It’s just tonally so different. And in an event where “Super Bowl commercial” is basically an aesthetic, looking different is invaluable. Adam Driver’s deadpan performance paired with meta wit translates beautifully. Also, the final ‘No, you did it Adam Driver’ has us in stitches.

Workday- Rockstar
Picking on an overused expression is a fun premise to begin with. Then, getting the actual rockstars to do it for you makes it even better. Admittedly, the-rockstar-fish-out-of-water concept is well trodden, with both Paul Stanley and Ozzy having more than their fair share of Super Bowl ads under their belts, but Ozzy Osbourne’s line “I’ve done my share of bad things. Also your share of bad things” makes that completely forgivable.
