Controversial SBS documentary Struggle Street will conclude next week the station has announced, after the program drew an audience of 935,000 according to the overnight preliminary ratings from OzTam.
SBS said in a statement this morning that: “Due to the significant public interest in the series in the lead up to its broadcast and in consideration of participants who bravely tell their stories, have decided to fast track the series’, which will now conclude in a two hour program next week.”
The series was created by SBS and Keo Films and was filmed over a six week period, with the program focusing on the lives of people in the Western Sydney suburb of Mount Druitt.
The series was the subject of controversy with the Sydney Morning Herald reporting this morning that Mount Druitt community leaders were left hurt, angry and feeling sick when the credits rolled.
A protest was also staged yesterday by garbage truck drivers from Blacktown Council in a bid to get the program axed due to its depiction of the residents in the area.
All of the noise around the program has paid off for SBS with the show making the top 10 in the overnight ratings, pipping Channel Nine's Reno Rumble which came in below Struggle Street with an audience of 791,000.
Struggle Street couldn't take-out Channel Ten's MasterChef, with the channel's flagship cooking program being the fourth watched show of the night, drawing an audience of 1.029 million according to OzTam.
Struggle Street will conclude next Wednesday at 8:30pm.
