Stay overnight in Airbnb's pimped-out plane

Airbnb’s latest promotional stunt for its “Night At” campaign is a plane that has been turned into a luxury loft on the runway of Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport. Airbnb is giving the winner of its competition the opportunity to spend the night in the decommissioned Royal Dutch Airlines jet, complete with a master bedroom, two children’s beds and eight bathrooms. And a home cinema that will play only films associated with flying.

All you have to do to win is tell Royal Dutch Airlines in 100 words or less why you would like to stay in the plane.

This isn’t the first time Airbnb has offered an unconventional prize for its “Night At” competition. In August Airbnb invited people to stay overnight in Sydney’s Ikea store in Tempe. The flatpack-furnishing store opened its doors, allowing entrants in Airbnb’s competition to sleep in its well-equipped showrooms.

Prior to the Ikea stunt, Airbnb offered the relatively more impressive opportunity for winners to stay in the French Chateau de Chenonceau, a castle in the heart of the Loire Valley. The winners were given the chance to stay where French history was made as well as being treated to breakfast and dinner. If you didn’t win you could still rent one of the 500 castles offered on Airbnb’s site.

Airbnb also teamed up with Waterstones Piccadilly, the largest bookstore in Europe, for another overnight stay. The top ten responses to the question “which book would you read if locked inside a bookstore overnight?” were invited to stay overnight on air mattresses, with snacks, free Wi-Fi, full access to the books and breakfast in the morning.

While the prizes are certainly weird and wonderful, they do fit the brief for the company, showcasing the strange array of accommodation available through the booking site. Though, unfortunately, the plane, Ikea and Waterstones Piccadilly are not usually available.
